THISIS50 - D’Zhana Simmons says she felt like a “fake person” for 118 days when she had no heart beating in her chest. “But I know that I really was here,” the 14-year-old said, “and I did live without a heart.”
As she was being released Wednesday from a Miami hospital, the shy teen seemed in awe of what she’s endured. Since July, she’s had two heart transplants and survived with artificial heart pumps — but no heart — for four months between the transplants.
Last spring D’Zhana and her parents learned she had an enlarged heart that was too weak to sufficiently pump blood. They traveled from their home in Clinton, S.C. to Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami for a heart transplant.
But her new heart didn’t work properly and could have ruptured so surgeons removed it two days later.
And they did something unusual, especially for a young patient: They replaced the heart with a pair of artificial pumping devices that kept blood flowing through her body until she could have a second transplant.
Dr. Peter Wearden, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh who works with the kind of pumps used in this case, said what the Miami medical team managed to do “is a big deal.”
“For (more than) 100 days, there was no heart in this girl’s body? That is pretty amazing,” Wearden said.
The pumps, ventricular assist devices, are typically used with a heart still in place to help the chambers circulate blood. With D’Zhana’s heart removed, doctors at Holtz Children’s Hospital crafted substitute heart chambers using a fabric and connected these to the two pumps.

I like the idea of a new set of superheroes, but I don’t about Josh Schwartz writing the script. I have never watched an episode of Gossip Girl or The O.C. and I knew those shows were for young teenage girls. Let’s just hope we don’t see Mischa Barton being cast as Shadowcat.
E! ONLINE - Josh Schwartz is well-versed in teen drama and genetically gifted frenemies, but how will he handle mutant superheroes and rabid fandom?
Schwartz, creator of Gossip Girl and The O.C., has been tapped by 20th Century Fox to pen X-Men: First Class, a reboot of the Marvel franchise featuring a new group of genetically enhanced youngsters undergoing instruction at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. First Class will be the small-screen achiever’s first foray into a major theatrical production.
The 32-year-old writer-producer is expected to inject the new addition to the X-Men canon—which soon will include X-Men Origins: Wolverine and another prequel focusing on the villainous Magneto—with his finely honed flair for showcasing teenage angst and modern coming-of-age sensibilities.
And while the possibility of directing the flick was posed to him, Schwartz has opted to stick to writing for now, according to Variety.
The trade reports that First Class could feature characters who have been glimpsed in the previous X-Men pictures, such as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat.
The more I hear some tracks that were left off The Game’s LAX album, the more I’m convinced he left a lot of great tracks off the album. Knowing artists now a days, he’ll probably just release a “super duper wish you would have waited to purchase this one instead collectors edition”, but I do like the sound of this track.

TMZ - Suge Knight now claims the Barstow cops did to his one ear what Kanye West did to his other.
Suge claims in his U.S. Bankruptcy case that while he was in custody back in 2005, he was passed around like a $2 whore — from Barstow police to the West Valley Detention Center to the California Institution for Men.
Somewhere along the way, Suge says his diamond stud earring was stolen.
Interesting, because Suge just filed a lawsuit against Kanye West, claiming West was responsible for another Suge earring heist. When Kanye was hosting a party in 2005, Suge was shot and his $135,000 earring allegedly was pilfered off his bleeding body.
There’s a buzz Suge soon will be filing suit against Diddy for the stud missing from his third ear.

OK, so the Lakers didn’t beat Boston, Detroit or even Cleveland, but they jumped all over the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday, 116-109, a welcome sight for them after all their issues with the Pistons last Friday.
Pau Gasol had 34 points, Kobe Bryant had 21 and the Lakers returned to the winning side after a long weekend of “What happened?” queries.
Chicago is a middle-of-the-road team from the East, lucky to even to be called a Boston Lite or Mini-Detroit, but the Bulls play with enough punch to earn a “gritty” tag from Bryant the day before the game.
It wasn’t quite enough to push away the memory of an 11-point home loss to Detroit, but the Lakers will gladly tuck away what happened Tuesday at Staples Center.
Ever since this film started filming all I’ve heard was bad things about it, but from seeing the trailer it looks a movie that will probably generate a lot of Oscar buzz.
For all you Pink Panther lovers out there.
Jim Carrey last couple of films have outright been horrible, but the trailer for Yes Man does look funny. We’ll see if it’s funny.
